Cyprus Hydrogen: the fuel of the future

Hydrogen Innovations Cyprus -Green hydrogen has been described as the rockstar of new energies

Hydrogen Innovations News - Electricity production by renewable sources such as solar, wind and tidal hydraulics now offers the most promising solutions to our current energy demands, taking a clean environment into consideration1. However, the electricity produced directly from renewable sources, such as wind and solar, may be negatively impacted by fluctuations in relevant geographical factors, such as cloud cover and low winds2. This then leads to an interrupted supply of the renewable energy, hence renewable energy must be stored and then used on demand for specific applications2. Among the various energy storage technologies, storage in the form of hydrogen is considered most preferable, due to the ability to store large amounts of energy for short and long periods of time, which can be decoupled upon demand3.

Will hydrogen experience a breakthrough in 2021?

Hydrogen Innovations NEWS - The hydrogen industry has seen a significant acceleration of activity recently, with new projects, pilot studies and commercial partnerships. It has been the subject of significant attention before. This time, the hype may be warranted, analysts say, and 2021 is likely to see even more activity.

How can Europe help build China’s Hydrogen economy?

Hydrogen innovation China - On 18th November Energy Post, in partnership with the EU-China Energy Cooperation Platform, hosted a series of online workshops under the theme “China: Carbon Neutral by 2060”. The purpose was to understand the Chinese landscape and uncover opportunities for Europe. Here, the moderator for our “Hydrogen” panel, Gökçe Mete, summarises the workshop which included an expert panel discussion and questions from the audience. Taking part were Tudor Constantinescu (Principle Advisor to the Director General, DG ENER), Joachim von Scheele (Global Director Commercialisation, Linde PLC) and Mickael Naouri (Corporate Affairs Director, Air Liquide). The workshop covered blue and green hydrogen, ambitious production targets, investment, innovation, hard-to-abate sectors, heavy transport, hydrogen fuel cells, regulations, fair competition and more. The challenges of giving birth to the hydrogen economy are tremendous, but that has not stopped it entering the decarbonisation plans of both the EU and China.

Hydrogen law and regulation in China

1. CURRENT STATE OF HYDROGEN PROJECTS IN CHINA
Hydrogen Innovation China - In 2018, China’s annual hydrogen production exceeded 20 million tonnes, and it has become the world's largest hydrogen energy producer and consumer. Production and sales of metal hydrogen storage materials have now surpassed Japan and China is fast becoming the world's largest hydrogen storage material producer and retailer. China produces mainly “grey” hydrogen with “green” hydrogen accounting for a very small proportion (less than 1%). It is likely that fossil fuel-based hydrogen will continue to be the main form of hydrogen produced in China over the next decade.
